Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 and the most active spiritual site of the Buganda Kingdom — the royal burial ground of four Buganda kings, restored after a 2010 fire.

How to get there

Within Kampala, a short drive from the city centre.

What to find

The Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, a large domed structure built entirely from organic materials (wood, thatch, reed), and ongoing traditional ceremonies.

Overview

The Kasubi Tombs, on a hill in Kampala, are the burial ground of four kabakas (kings) of Buganda: Muteesa I, Mwanga II, Daudi Chwa II and Sir Edward Muteesa II. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

The main building, the Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, is a masterpiece of traditional Ganda architecture, built from wooden poles, reeds, bark cloth and thatch. After it was destroyed by fire in 2010, it was carefully rebuilt using traditional skills and materials. It remains an active spiritual centre for the Buganda Kingdom.
