Chimpanzee Habituation in Kibale: A Full Day with the Chimps

A standard chimpanzee trek gives you one hour with a chimp community. The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale National Park gives you most of a day, alongside the researchers who are getting a new community used to people.

How the day works

You set off very early, often before dawn, to reach the chimps as they leave their nests, and you stay with the group through the day while they feed, travel, rest, groom and squabble. The habituation team explains what they’re recording and why. Because this community is less used to people, the chimps can move fast and far, so expect a long and active day in the forest.

What it costs

The Uganda Wildlife Authority lists the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience at US$300 for foreign non-residents in 2026, rising to US$400 from 1 January 2027. The standard one-hour chimp tracking permit is US$250 now and US$300 from 2027, so habituation is very good value for the extra time.

Tracking or habituation?

  • Choose tracking if you’re short on time, travelling with older children, or want to combine chimps with other activities on the same day.
  • Choose habituation if you love wildlife behaviour and photography, and don’t mind a long day on your feet.

What to bring

Long sleeves and trousers, waterproof boots, a rain jacket, plenty of water, and a packed lunch. Flash photography isn’t allowed, and the minimum age for chimpanzee activities in Uganda is 12.
