Overview

Kampala is Uganda's capital and largest city, traditionally said to be built on seven hills. It's loud, busy and energetic, with busy markets, a lively food and nightlife scene, and landmarks from the Buganda Kingdom, the colonial era and independence.

Most safari itineraries begin or end here or in nearby Entebbe, and a day in the city is a great way to see modern Uganda beyond the parks.

Highlights

  • The Kasubi Tombs and the Buganda Kingdom sites: the Lubiri, the Bulange and the Kabaka's Lake
  • Views over the city from the minaret of the Uganda National Mosque
  • The Uganda Museum and the Ndere Cultural Centre
  • The Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, a major pilgrimage site every 3 June
  • Craft markets and a lively restaurant scene
