Uganda Martyrs Shrine, Namugongo
One of Africa's most important Christian pilgrimage sites, honouring the Uganda Martyrs killed in 1885–1887.
How to get there
About 15 km east of central Kampala, roughly 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.
What to find
The Catholic basilica, the Anglican shrine and museum, and the Martyrs' Day pilgrimage every 3 June.
Overview
Namugongo is where many of the Uganda Martyrs, young Catholic and Anglican converts at the court of Kabaka Mwanga II, were killed between 1885 and 1887. The 22 Catholic martyrs were canonised as saints in 1964.
Today there are two major sites: the Catholic Basilica, built in the shape of a traditional Ganda hut, and the Anglican Martyrs' Shrine and museum. Every 3 June, Martyrs' Day draws huge numbers of pilgrims from Uganda and neighbouring countries, many of them walking for days to get there.
