Rwanda · National Parks
National Parks
Rwanda is a small country with just four national parks — rather than a separate wildlife-reserve network, the Rwanda Development Board concentrates conservation and tourism into these four, each protecting a distinct ecosystem.
Volcanoes National Park
Northwestern Rwanda (Musanze)- What's special
- Africa's oldest national park, and part of the only habitat in the world where mountain gorillas survive, shared with Uganda and DR Congo across the Virunga Mountains.
- How to get there
- By road from Kigali via Musanze, roughly two hours on tarmac — the shortest, most direct gorilla-trekking access of any country.
- What to find
- Gorilla trekking across multiple habituated families, separate golden monkey tracking, and hikes up the dormant Virunga volcanoes (Bisoke, Karisimbi).
Akagera National Park
Eastern Rwanda- What's special
- Rwanda's only savanna park and its Big Five destination — lions and black rhino were both reintroduced here after being locally wiped out, in partnership with African Parks.
- How to get there
- By road from Kigali, roughly two and a half hours northeast toward the Tanzanian border.
- What to find
- Classic game drives, a dozen lakes including Lake Ihema, and boat trips for hippo and crocodile sightings.
Nyungwe National Park
Southwestern Rwanda- What's special
- One of Africa's oldest rainforests, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in September 2023, with over 1,100 recorded plant species and 13 primate species.
- How to get there
- By road from Kigali, roughly four to five hours southwest, or paired with Akagera and Volcanoes on a country-loop itinerary.
- What to find
- Chimpanzee tracking, golden and L'Hoest's monkeys, a canopy walkway above the forest floor, and the Congo-Nile Trail.
Gishwati-Mukura National Park
Western Rwanda- What's special
- Rwanda's newest and smallest national park, created in 2015 from two remnant forest reserves to reconnect fragmented rainforest.
- How to get there
- By road from Kigali or as a stop between Kigali and Volcanoes/Nyungwe on the western route.
- What to find
- Chimpanzees, golden monkeys, and a quieter, far less-visited alternative to Rwanda's headline parks.
Rwanda · Culture & Heritage
Sacred & Cultural Places
Rwanda's cultural sites range from the royal seat of its former monarchy to memorials that hold a central place in the country's modern identity.
Kigali Genocide Memorial
Gisozi, Kigali- What's special
- The resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and part of a UNESCO World Heritage inscription (2023) memorialising the genocide. A profoundly important site for understanding Rwanda's modern history.
- How to get there
- Within Kigali, a short drive from the city centre.
- What to find
- Exhibition halls on the genocide's history, the Wall of Names, and memorial gardens; visited thoughtfully rather than as a typical tourist stop.
King's Palace Museum, Nyanza
Nyanza, Southern Province- What's special
- A reconstruction of the traditional royal palace of the Rwandan monarchy, on the site that served as its seat for centuries.
- How to get there
- By road from Kigali, roughly ninety minutes south.
- What to find
- The beehive-shaped traditional royal residence, the 1930s modern palace, royal regalia, and Rwanda's ceremonial long-horned Inyambo cattle.
Murambi Genocide Memorial
Southern Province- What's special
- A former technical school turned genocide memorial, honouring victims killed there in 1994; a sobering counterpart to the Kigali memorial.
- How to get there
- By road from Huye (formerly Butare), in Rwanda's south.
- What to find
- Preserved exhibits and memorial grounds maintained as a site of remembrance and education.
Inema Arts Center
Kigali- What's special
- A contemporary art space founded by two Rwandan brothers, central to Kigali's post-genocide creative and artistic renaissance.
- How to get there
- Within Kigali.
- What to find
- Paintings, sculpture and mixed media by resident Rwandan artists, with regular evening events.
