Murambi Genocide Memorial

A former technical school turned genocide memorial, honouring victims killed there in 1994; a sobering counterpart to the Kigali memorial.

How to get there

By road from Huye (formerly Butare), in Rwanda's south.

What to find

Preserved exhibits and memorial grounds maintained as a site of remembrance and education.

Overview

The Murambi Genocide Memorial, near Nyamagabe in southern Rwanda, stands on the site of a technical school where tens of thousands of people who had sought refuge were killed in April 1994. It's one of the four memorial sites included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.

Murambi is among the most confronting memorials in Rwanda. Some of the victims' remains are preserved and displayed as testimony to what happened. The visit is profoundly sobering, and many find it a powerful act of remembrance.
