Tarangire National Park

Known for enormous baobab trees and, in the dry season, some of the highest elephant densities in Tanzania.

How to get there

By road from Arusha, roughly two hours, making it an easy first or last stop on a northern-circuit itinerary.

What to find

Large elephant herds, iconic baobabs, and dry-season wildlife concentrations along the Tarangire River.

Overview

Tarangire National Park covers about 2,850 km² south of Arusha, and is named after the Tarangire River, the only permanent source of water in the area during the dry season.

From about June to October, huge herds of elephants, along with zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and predators, gather along the river among ancient baobab trees. It's one of the best places in Tanzania to see elephants.

Highlights

  • Large elephant herds in the dry season
  • Giant baobab trees
  • Lions, leopards and more than 500 bird species
