Town · North Kivu, on Lake Kivu
Goma
The main gateway town for Virunga National Park, on the DRC-Rwanda border and Lake Kivu's northern shore, in the shadow of Mount Nyiragongo.
Travel status: since M23 rebels took control of Goma in January 2025 and Bukavu in February 2025, normal tourism in eastern DR Congo has been disrupted, and most governments advise against travel. We only arrange trips here when parks are officially open and we've confirmed it's safe.
How to get there
By road from Rubavu/Gisenyi, Rwanda, across the Grande Barrière border crossing, or by flight to Goma International Airport.
What to find
Virunga's park office and permit collection point, Lake Kivu's shoreline, and views of Nyiragongo's active crater.
Overview
Goma is the capital of North Kivu province, on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, right next to the Rwandan town of Rubavu. Above the city rises Mount Nyiragongo, whose lava flows have reached the town, most recently in 2002 and 2021.
For years Goma was the gateway to Virunga National Park's gorillas and to the Nyiragongo volcano hike. In January 2025 the city was taken over by M23 rebels, and normal tourism has been disrupted since.
