National Parks
Kenya's national parks are run by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), which manages 27 in total (23 on land, four marine). Six of the most-visited are detailed below.
Amboseli National Park
Southern Kenya- What's special
- The classic Kenyan image — large elephant herds walking beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, just across the Tanzanian border.
- How to get there
- By road from Nairobi, roughly four hours southeast, or by scheduled light aircraft.
- What to find
- Big elephant herds, swamps that stay green year-round, and some of the most reliable Kilimanjaro views in East Africa.
Tsavo East & Tsavo West National Parks
Southeastern Kenya- What's special
- Together one of the largest protected areas in the world, and the setting of the famous 19th-century "Man-Eaters of Tsavo" lion story.
- How to get there
- By road from Nairobi or Mombasa, roughly midway between the two along the main highway.
- What to find
- Red-dusted elephants, the Mzima Springs' underwater hippo-viewing chamber, and vast, genuinely wild bush country.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Central Rift Valley- What's special
- A compact Rift Valley lake park built around black and white rhino sanctuaries and, historically, huge flamingo flocks.
- How to get there
- By road from Nairobi, roughly two and a half hours northwest.
- What to find
- Rhino, Rothschild's giraffe, and dense bird life around the lake shore.
Aberdare National Park
Central Kenya- What's special
- A high-altitude forest park known for its "tree hotel" lodges, where guests watch wildlife visit a floodlit waterhole through the night.
- How to get there
- By road from Nairobi, roughly two to three hours north.
- What to find
- Forest elephant and buffalo, waterfalls, and overnight tree-lodge game viewing.
Mount Kenya National Park
Central Kenya- What's special
- A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, protecting Africa's second-highest peak and its surrounding glacial and Afro-alpine zones.
- How to get there
- By road from Nairobi, roughly three to four hours north, based from Nanyuki or Naro Moru.
- What to find
- Multi-day mountain trekking, twelve glaciers, and vegetation zones that shift dramatically with altitude.
Nairobi National Park
Nairobi- What's special
- A genuine wildlife park with lions, rhino and giraffe, inside the boundary of a capital city — the skyline is visible from the game drive.
- How to get there
- Within Nairobi, a short drive from the city centre.
- What to find
- Black rhino sanctuary, big cats, and the closest possible safari to an international airport.

Wildlife Reserves
Alongside its national parks, Kenya has around 28 national reserves managed by county governments rather than KWS — including its single most famous protected area.
Maasai Mara National Reserve
Southwestern Kenya- What's special
- Kenya's best-known reserve and the northern stage of the annual wildebeest migration — run by county government rather than the national wildlife service, unlike Kenya's national parks.
- How to get there
- By road from Nairobi, roughly five to six hours, or by scheduled light aircraft (around 45 minutes).
- What to find
- The Great Migration's river crossings (July-October), dense big-cat populations, and classic open savanna.
Samburu National Reserve
Northern Kenya- What's special
- A drier, more rugged reserve along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, home to species found nowhere else in Kenya's more famous southern parks.
- How to get there
- By road from Nairobi, roughly five to six hours north, or by scheduled flight.
- What to find
- The "Samburu Special Five": Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and beisa oryx.
Buffalo Springs National Reserve
Northern Kenya- What's special
- Across the river from Samburu, sharing its wildlife and drier, semi-arid character.
- How to get there
- Adjoining Samburu National Reserve, reached the same way.
- What to find
- The same arid-country specialist species as Samburu, with fewer visitors.
Lake Bogoria National Reserve
Rift Valley- What's special
- A Rift Valley soda lake known historically for enormous flamingo congregations, alongside hot springs and geysers on its shore.
- How to get there
- By road from Nairobi, roughly three to four hours northwest.
- What to find
- Flamingos (numbers vary with water levels), steaming hot springs, and dramatic Rift Valley escarpment scenery.

Kenya holds eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites in total; four of its cultural sites are detailed below.
Lamu Old Town
Lamu Island, Coast Province- What's special
- The oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, continuously inhabited for over 700 years, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
- How to get there
- By scheduled flight to Lamu, or a longer road-and-ferry route from Mombasa.
- What to find
- Car-free streets, coral-stone architecture with carved wooden doors, and the annual Lamu Cultural Festival.
Fort Jesus
Mombasa- What's special
- A 16th-century Portuguese fort guarding Mombasa's old port, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 and one of the best-preserved examples of Renaissance military fortification anywhere.
- How to get there
- Within Mombasa Old Town.
- What to find
- Original coral-rock ramparts, a museum of coastal trade history, and views over the harbour.
Sacred Mijikenda Kaya Forests
Coastal Kenya- What's special
- Eleven sacred forest sites along the coast, remnants of fortified Mijikenda villages dating to the 16th century, inscribed by UNESCO in 2008.
- How to get there
- Scattered along the coast between Mombasa and Malindi; specific kayas are visited with a local guide.
- What to find
- Forest considered sacred by the Mijikenda people, still used for ceremonies today.
Gedi Ruins
Near Malindi- What's special
- The ruins of a medieval Swahili town abandoned in the 17th century, added to the UNESCO list as recently as 2024.
- How to get there
- By road from Malindi, a short drive.
- What to find
- Coral-stone mosque and palace ruins set within surrounding forest.

- Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre, and the Karen Blixen Museum.
Mombasa
Kenyan Coast- What's special
- Kenya's second city and main port, with a distinct Swahili coastal culture shaped by centuries of Indian Ocean trade.

- By road or rail from Nairobi (roughly five hours), or direct flights from Nairobi and international hubs.
- What to find
- Fort Jesus, Old Town's narrow streets, and beach resorts along the coastline north and south of the city.
Naivasha
Rift Valley- What's special
- A lake town in the Rift Valley, an easy addition for travelers short on time who still want a taste of the Rift.

- The main base town for Mount Kenya's northern approach, sitting almost exactly on the Equator.
