Overview

Arusha, at the foot of Mount Meru, is the safari capital of northern Tanzania and the starting point for trips to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. It's also an important diplomatic and conference city.

Nearby Arusha National Park is often overlooked, but it's a gem: canoeing and walking safaris, the Momella lakes, and the climb of Mount Meru (4,566m), a great warm-up or alternative to Kilimanjaro.
