National Park · Eastern DR Congo (South Kivu)

Kahuzi-Biega National Park

Home to the world's largest population of Grauer's (eastern lowland) gorilla, a subspecies found only in DR Congo.

Travel status: since M23 rebels took control of Goma in January 2025 and Bukavu in February 2025, normal tourism in eastern DR Congo has been disrupted, and most governments advise against travel. We only arrange trips here when parks are officially open and we've confirmed it's safe.

How to get there

Via Bukavu, on Lake Kivu's southern shore, reached from Kigali by road across the border.

What to find

Eastern lowland gorilla trekking, dense Albertine Rift rainforest, and forest elephant and chimpanzee.

Overview

Kahuzi-Biega National Park, near Bukavu, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. It's named after two extinct volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi (about 3,300m) and Mount Biega (about 2,800m).

The park is the most important stronghold of the Grauer's gorilla (eastern lowland gorilla), the largest gorilla subspecies, found only in eastern DR Congo. It also protects chimpanzees, forest elephants and many Albertine Rift birds.

Highlights

  • Trekking to see habituated Grauer's gorillas
  • Hikes up Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega
